Dear Mr. President,
I heard the call to unity in your inauguration speech. I, too, long to be united. But we have a problem which prevents the possibility of uniting this nation. The Supreme Court has overstepped its bounds. They have denied the people their voice. They have found things in the constitution which were never there and never imagined when the founding fathers created the original document. In so doing, the Supreme Court has effectively created a state sponsored religion.
I tried to respond to your call for unity in an open letter to you which I sent to various national newspapers and to my local newspaper. The local newspaper informed me that they have rules which prevent the publication of open letters. I fear the other newspapers have similar rules.
Perhaps I should have written this letter directly to you in the first place. I hope you will hear me.
Sincerely,
Brian J. McMahon

Open Letter To President Clinton
We might be united in our death. We might be united in our life. But we cannot be united in both at once.
We will never be united until we decide what we stand for. We cannot stand for life and death. We are divided by our rights. We have no obligations. What shall we stand for?
We are suffering the tyranny of a supreme court with the gall to speak for us on the issues of life and death. It is a state sponsored religion offered in the name of my rights.
I would trust the full voice of the people after an open and hearty debate. Will that voice ever be heard from again? Until it is, we will never be united.
And for me, I will have to find my happiness and hope and dignity, not in this country, but in jousting with windmills. It is a good fight. And I am happy. And I am mad. But I am not insane.
Brian J. McMahon
